Even a battalion of 200 armed police personnel, including the anti-riot force, could not avert a gory incident in Hyatpur village where a mob burnt alive a contract killer who was fleeing after shooting the sarpanch on Thursday (23-June-2011).
Angry villagers near Gurgaon tried to burn a man alive for killing a village sarpanch. The man died in the hospital, but police said that the absconding assailants are part of a criminal gang.
"We are trying to ascertain the identities of the attacker. So far we have not arrested or detained anybody," Gurgaon Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Mittal told IANS.
The incident took place in Hayatpur village near Manesar Thursday when three to four other men, led by main accused Rakesh, attacked and fired at the village headman, also a Rakesh.
In the meantime, as the killers were trying to flee, the villagers nabbed one of them and beat him up. Eyewitnesses said that even before the police could reach the place, the killer, named Rakesh, was half- dead from the beating he received at the hands of the villagers.
When the police tried to take the killer away, the mob poured kerosene over him and set him on fire. The mob also fought a pitched battle with the police, pelting stones at the police van. Four policemen and three media persons were injured in the stone-pelting.
